There’s a kind of grief we don’t talk about enough:
Micro Grief ~ and it shows up a lot for novelty-seekers, especially those of us with ADHD. 🧠
🎨 It happens when a hobby, interest, or passion that once lit you up… suddenly doesn’t.
Not because you failed. Not because you’re flaky. Not because you “can’t stick with anything.” But because your nervous system is wired for novelty. 🎉
When the dopamine dries up, the excitement fades, and instead of just moving on, there’s often a quiet sadness. Sometimes even shame.
“Why can’t I finish?”
“Why did I lose interest?”
“What’s wrong with me?”
That sadness is real. It’s grief for a version of you that felt alive, curious, inspired. 🏔️
Here’s the reframe that matters:
This is a natural cycle.
Not a character flaw!!!
✨ For many neurodivergent people, interests are seasonal. They arrive intensely, give us something we need (regulation, joy, identity, stimulation), and then they leave when their job is done.
😴 Burnout doesn’t mean the hobby was a mistake.
Losing interest doesn’t erase the value it brought you.
And beating yourself up won’t resurrect the joy anyway.
🫂 What does help is understanding what’s actually happening.
Because the more information you have, the kinder you become to yourself. And the kinder you are, the safer it feels to rest… and eventually rediscover curiosity again.
You’re not inconsistent.
You’re responsive.
And that’s not something to be ashamed of.
✨ The more you know, the better you can take care of yourself. ✨
