How did Gen X/ Millennials get the hardest job of all? Raising an entire generation of leaders is a tall order.
My kids ask quite often "Who's the boss? You or mom? Who's in charge?" They have their theories but the truth is we both take on different leadership roles in their life. My husband and I each play to our strengths and carry different mental loads to make sure the kids have everything they need.
In the animal kingdom we refer to the leader as the “alpha.” I think we forget humans are just sophisticated animals. Our social dynamics are complex and kids want to understand pecking order. So we started to explain the concept of an alpha role.
What is an alpha?
Fiction- tall, charming, smart, loud, bully, aggressive
Whomp 🚫
Fact- composed leader, protector, competent and acts with integrity. Someone who makes sure that everyone in their group is fed, safe and cared for.
The alpha generation is a strong willed group of kids and it's our responsibility to instill the qualities of valuable leadership in them.
And most parents are quietly asking,
“How do I give my kid freedom…
without losing my authority in the process?”
That tension is exactly where power struggles are born because we swung the pendulum from
“do what I say because I said so”…to “I don’t want to damage my child, so I hesitate to lead at all.”
And now a lot of homes feel stuck in the middle because parents struggle with knowing when to step in and lead…and when to step back and let them grow.
